Verbs ending -ir irregularities

 

* Verbs ending in |-ir| having the vowel |e| at the second-to-the-last syllable have the root changed when they are conjugated in the present tense. The vowel |e| is changed for |i| just for the first person Eu.

Examples:

Eu visto a camisa. > I wear the shirt.
Eu não minto. > I don’t lie.

Eu sinto o calor. > I feel the heat.

** Verbs ending in |-ir| having the vowel |o| at the second-to-the-last syllable have the root changed when they are conjugated in the present tense. The vowel |o| is changed for |u| just for the first person Eu.

Examples:

Eu durmo toda a noite. > I sleep the whole night.

*** The verbs ending in |-gir| like fugir, dirigir, change the |g| into |j| before the letter |o| to maintain the sound in the first person.

Examples:

Eu fugo de ti. > I escape from you.

**** The verbs ending in |-uir| like distinguir, seguir, loose the |u| before the |o|, because it is not necessary to maintain the sound in the first person.

Examples:

Você parte a madeira. > You break the wood.
Nós abrimos a loja. > We open the shop.
Elas nao assistem ao concerto porque estao doentes. > They don’t assist to the concert because they are sick.
Vocês dormem muito todos os dias. > You sleep a lot everyday.
